I have updated this list with all the boutique hotels that opened in 2016.  You may want to check them out and add them to your list of places to visit.

As usual this list of new boutique hotels 2016 is my own selection. I have removed all the big luxury resorts with lots of rooms but kept a few luxury ones that might take your (and mine!) fancy for a special occasion. Enjoy!

France

Paris Boutik

Paris Boutik, a unique concept of a room in a former bookshop. Paris boutique hotel

Now, this is a fun discovery: the concept is to create a hotel room in a shop. They started with a book shop and created a 45m2 suite in the heart of the Marais, opposite the oldest Parisian market – The Enfants Rouges – and surrounded by the trendiest shops and restaurants in Paris.  The price simply depends on the number of beds used in the room. You have to book one or two beds and give the number of people staying so that beds can be made and so that you get the right number of towels, you must also let them know if a baby folding bed is needed (optional).

Château St Pierre de Serjac, Languedoc, France

Serjac, a new hotel opening in February 2016 in Languedoc, France. Same concept as their original property, Chateau Les Carasses: an old property renovated to welcome rooms but also self-catering properties with hotel services.
© Serjac

This is the sister hotel to Chateau Les Carrasses where we stayed on their opening year (still have to write a post about them). They are applying a similar concept of a renovated chateau hosting both bedrooms and self-catering appartments/villas with hotel services and lots of activities for families (pools, tennis, petanque area…)  The new addition is a Spa Les Cinq Mondes. Treatments from this brand are always fab (I used to have an annual subscription to their first place in Paris) so that should be fab!

Hotel Taos, Tignes

Continuing on the trend of new stylish ski hotels, Hotel Taos will open soon in Tignes, France.  They are aiming for a New Mexico inspired ambiance, inspired by the Taos region.  There is direct access onto the Lavachet piste.  They have appartments for 4 to 6 people which would be good for families as they have kitchenettes.  There will also be an indoor pool!

If you’re a fan of new meets old when it comes to architecture and interiors then you’ll love this incredible space in Cologne. The recently unveiled QVEST Hotel was conceptualized by Michael Kaune, the owner of QVEST magazine, and combines Neo-Gothic architecture with contemporary art and design. Built in 1897, the building was formerly the home of the Historic Archive of Cologne. Today, the heritage site boasts 34 exquisitely designed hotel rooms furnished with pieces by Corbusier, Jacobsen, and other design greats. Guests can even shop similar pieces in a well-curated boutique on the premises. Can you imagine waking up to sun streaming in those spectacular windows…?! Adding Cologne to my travel wish list!

Greece

Santo Maris Oia, Santorini

Santo Maris Oia, a design and luxury hotel in Santorini. Perfect for a romantic trip. One of the new hotel openings of 2016

Santorini is as pretty as on the postcards. I have wonderful memories of a backpacking trip there 20 years ago and a more romantic one ten years ago.  Over the years, lots of new places have opened in Oia, which was so isolated when I first visited it.  Anyway, this new place has great reviews and exudes privacy. The hotel is five minutes walk from the Oia village and is a quality hotel with style and comfort. Some rooms have a hot tub.

Italy

I have noticed it before and thought it would open in 2015 but it’s now scheduled for Spring 2016.  The 16th century building has gone through two years of meticulous renovation.  The owners promise six gardens (including a yoga garden) with hammocks to relax, a pool garden and some modern design inside. Reading the description, the idea of external showers in scorching heat really appeals to me!

Castel Falfi, Tuscany

This place already has quite a resort but they are opening a 5 stars hotel later this year.  I don’t yet have more details on this.

Furnas boutique hotel, Azores

Furnas Boutique Hotel, a new design hotel in Azores, Portugal. One of the new boutique hotels opening in 2016

The  hotel has been redecorated in 2015 and kind of “relaunched” in 2016.  The look is very much design minimalism in tones of brown and white, calling to mind the volcanic vapors and verdant earth of the Azores. Notable Portuguese designer Nini Andrade Silva created a nature-inspired nest that surprises with giant photographs, furniture made from salvaged wood, and floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase the glorious surroundings. The hotel takes advantage of the island’s thermal energy: the Furnas municipality’s old thermal center has been restored to create a spa.

Spain

Mercer Hotel, Seville

This new 5 stars hotel in Seville has appealed to me so much that I booked it for our forthcoming Andalucia trip.  We loved the fact that there are only 12 rooms, the clarity of the design, the white space, the great location and the pool on the rooftop. First reviews are also very positive.

Casa Bonay, Barcelona

Casa Bonay Barcelona, a new boutique hotel with great decor. One of the boutique hotel openings of 2016 listed in this blog post.

Actually this one opened in October 2015 but I have been meaning to talk about it for a while and thought it could fit in that list today! You probably have heard of this one last year through many bloggers and press articles. The hotel has struck a chord because of its lovely decoration, great service and good location.

United Kingdom

The owners of this new boutique hotel are behind Calcot Manor (very appreciated by families) and  Barnsley House (nice for a romantic stay). The Painswick has already received lots of recognition and great reviews since it opened.

The Pig does it again and finds a beautiful historical building set in green landscapes for its new establishment.  I wonder if this will rival our dear Endsleigh?

King Street Townhouse, Manchester

I have updated this list with all the boutique hotels that opened in 2016. You may want to check them out and add them to your list of places to visit.

In a grade II listed building that used to be the Manchester Salford Trustees Bank, the hotel has made sure to retain a true British style with patterned wallpaper, modern art, digital bedside radios and smart bathrooms. There is a heated outdoor rooftop pool soon and a relaxation floor with a steam room and two treatment rooms.

The Forest Side Hotel, Lake District

I find it quite difficult to locate a stylish boutique hotel in the Lake District so I hope this one will buck the trend for old-fashioned and traditional ones.

The Dog & Badger, Buckinghamshire

The Dog and Badger, new inn opening in 2016. 6 rooms in a charming old cottage. Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom

I don’t often talk about this region because it’s very close to London and we never go there but that might be of interest to some of you.   Gillman’s Cottage is a pretty, quintessentially English cottage located next to The Dog & Badger.  The rooms all retain their original character but have the added benefit of modern amenities such as individually controlled air conditioning.
