For those who follow, I started yesterday to answer my sister’s holiday challenge for a nice hotels along a road trip from Bristol to Tavistock.
Part 1 was about Somerset and Exeter and today we are going to go West towards Exmoor Park, North Cornwall and back to Dartmoor.
The Challenge
- Going from Bristol to Tavistock and doing a nice road trip.
- They have two boys of 10 and 12 and want to stay in pretty English places at medium prices.
- Her husband is quite a chef so good food is one of their criteria.
Rather than going towards Bath, I am sending them today straight down from Bristol to Exmoor Park and then along the coast to the top of the North Cornwall coast before turning back towards Dartmoor.
I found the below places for a relaxing stay.
Heasley house hotel
- 8 bedrooms
- From £ 150
- Website
A very personal welcome from the owners who took this over this year and are redesigning it. Lovely country setting and intimate rooms.A good base to explore the Exmoor park.
The Beach at Bude
- 16 rooms
- From £95
- Website
Whether they come via itinerary 1 or itinerary 2, they should explore the Dartmoor park and there are a couple of places I have identified. We haven’t stayed yet at them but some of my friends have and they recommended them.
Weeke Barton
- 5 bedrooms
- From £ 110
- Website
Lots of accolades for this B&B in the middle of Dartmoor. Looking at the pictures, it feels like you are in a friend’s house, a friend who just happens to be able to cook restaurant dishes and proper breakfast in the morning. The house is 500 years old and typical of the region architecture.
Gidleigh Park
- 24 rooms
- From £266
- Website
This is a luxury hotel so might be too expensive for a night stay but they should consider going there for lunch/diner as it’s of course the restaurant of Michael Caine who has two Michelin stars. Lovely park, spa rooms and all the amenities of a luxury hotel.
Bovey castle
- 64 bedrooms and 14 country lodges with kitchen
- From £191
- Website
Another hotel which is on the pricier side but it is known to be very good for kids. A playroom, activities organised for kids from 7 to 14 years old… You even get Legos delivered to the room !
I will of course ask my sister to report back on their choices with photos and all so that all of us can benefit from their experience.
Have I forgotten any hidden gem ? Let me know in the comments.
