5 stars hotel in Alentejo focusing on art
The new way to discover art and design now seems to be luxury hotels! Da Licenca joins the likes of Domaine des Etangs, Villa La Coste, Heckfield Place (where we’re going in December, yeah!), fabulous hotels that put the emphasis on displaying amazing collections of art or design pieces.
Often, they are reviving former farming estates or vineyards or crafts factories. At Da Licenca, it’s olive oil production that is the backdrop. Herdade das Freiras was from 1830 an important olive oil production estate.
Da Licenca, a newcomer on the Alentejo hotels scene
Opened recently, Da Licenca is set amongst vast acres of hills covered in olive trees. The white building is striking amongst that panorama.
Inside, the focus is on space to showcase the collection of design furniture and art pieces. There are only four suites and two bedrooms.
Dining can be arranged in one of the three private dining rooms in the main house. There is also a restaurant housed in the original olive press from 1904, which is also where most of the art and furniture collection is displayed.
Suites with private pools
The suites are between 50 and 180 square meters so you will definitely have space to spread. You only have to check the photos above to be impressed by the design and elegance.
I am particularly impressed by the large bathrooms, some of them have baths which have been carved in a full marble block!
Of course, the suites have outdoor spaces, either patios or terraces and two of them even have a private pool.
Da Licenca looks quite special. I’ve started to see it popping into design and high end magazines but you will have read about it here first!
There are many more boutique hotels in Portugal. Check out my list.
