I could have done a list of the most romantic hotels for Valentine’s day but a) many others have done it and b) Valentine’s is not that much of a big thing in France.
However, if a reader asks me to find a place that has “luxe, calme et volupté” (luxury, peace and pleasure) as part of my holiday challenge series, then of course I get interested. Frédérique and her husband want to spend a few days in Rome and after exploring the city, would like to have some relaxation outside of Rome on their way back to the Fumicino airport.
The challenge
- 3 days in Rome and 3 days on the coast for a couple
- luxury hotel
- budget : no limit (although there is of course a limit so I didn’t go mad with the hotels below apart from one !)
There are so many hotels in Rome that I was spoilt for choice and could have kept researching for ages. I settled on a few that looked boutique and special enough that they would make our two love birds feel in the mood for love!
5 romantic hotels in Rome
Hotel Rome G-Rough
- 10 bedrooms
- From 425 Euros
- Website

We start with a brand new hotel which just opened. One of the city’s five star luxury hotels, it is very well located as being near toP iazza Navona, one of Rome’s famous landmark square and Italy’s most sought-after outdoor meeting point. I really like the rough walls and beautiful tiled floors and this could be quite a gem.
Crossing Condotti
- 5 rooms
- From 230 Euros
- Website

This is more like staying with stylish friends than a pure hotel. There are a few rooms in this beautiful townhouse but they do serve breakfast. You can also rent a self-catering apartment which would be a practical solution for families.
Portrait Roma
- 14 Rooms
- From 500 €
- Website

For this special touch, Portrait Roma seems to be the right choice. Reviews rave about the service and the special attention. The location is also pretty perfect: two blocks from the Spanish Steps and right on Via Condotti and two block from Via Del Corso (both great shopping streets). The hotel has a roof deck and the breakfast that is included in the price either served on the roof deck or in your room. What romantic sights !
Casa Montani
- 5 rooms
- From €180
- Website

Now, that’s a find: a luxury B&B with rooms starting below 100€ is not an easy find in Rome. No wonder it received Condé Nast Johansens award for Best Value 2015. And you can’t get much more intimate than that : 5 bedrooms and a property directly managed by the owner. It’s also very well located for sight-seeing.
JK Roma

- 39 rooms
- From 355 €
- website
Housed in what was once rome’s school of architecture, boutique hotel jk place roma needs no lessons on design or hospitality. classrooms have been transformed into elegant bedrooms with mid-century furniture and bold splashes of colour.
3 relaxing hotels in Lazio
Antonello Collona Vallefredda
- 52 minutes from Rome
- 12 rooms
- From 200€
- Website

This one is actually really close to Rome so could be a good stop en route to La Posta Vecchia below. It’s more Milan style than classic Rome style with its very modern building, Eames chair and pared down bedroom. It has a nice garden and a heated indoor pooll for hydromassages with magnesium and potassium !
La Posta Vecchia
- 19 rooms
- From €340
- Website

A very classic decor but its position on the coast makes for very romantic evenings.
Il Flogliano
- From 144 Euros
- 1h22 from Rome
- Website

Set on the coastal dunes of the National Park of Circeo, between the lake of Fogliano and the sea, this is a totally different choice than above. With its sleek design life, you are in full contemporary aesthetics. It has great sea view from almost everywhere in the hotel and a nice private beach. You are also a short drive from beautiful old abbeys and hill towns such as Sermoneta and Bassiano.
And a bonus
Relais Chalons d’Orange
- 1h30 from Rome
- Their website didn’t allow me to see the prices but I would guess it’s in the 200€ area
- Website

This is not a coastal hotel but at 1h30 from Rome, it offers a mix of relaxation and sophistication that is quite appealing. Love the view from the pool as well and check the food photos on the site! Reviews on Tripadvisor are excellent. And it has a French name so how could I resist !
