Royal Champagne hotel and spa review – ending our summer in style

France Hotels

Mademoiselle was kindly invited to a rock festival in Paris by a friend the day just before her birthday. As we were supposed to meet our friends in Paris to collect her, we thought it could be a good opportunity to go check out the Royal Champagne for the last luxury weekend of our summer.

Royal Champagne hotel and Spa sits in the heart of the champagne region

Location 4/5

The Royal Champagne hotel and Spa is in the Champagne region – of course – and is quickly reachable via a 40 minutes train journey from Gare de l’Est. So if you arrive in Gare du Nord from Eurostar, you can do the quick 10’ tube or walk to Gare de l’Est and be there in no time.

They can arrange for a car to collect you for the 20’ journey to the hotel from the train station. The drive through the forêt de Verzy is  really lovely.

Or you can go straight from the Charles de Gaulle airport, it will take 90 minutes.

The hotel was built on top of a hill with sweeping views of the Marne valley, Epernay and the vineyard.  It is an excellent base to go explore all the various “maisons de champagne” of the region.

Royal Champagne hotel luxury style

Style 4/5

Everything feels very luxurious at the Royal Champagne: stylish materials, gold and silver hues, chandeliers everywhere. The rooms are well appointed and the stone sink in particular is superb. However it was all a bit too corporate and impersonal for our taste. Our room and Zoe’s bedroom were exactly the same for instance barr for the wallpaper which had the same pattern but was pink in hers and yellow in ours.

This didn’t stop us from enjoying the hotel as you’ll read below and we thought that maybe the hotel would be more charming in the autumn with the colourful vineyards as the background and fire in the huge fireplaces.

Our room was a Royal junior suite. Mademoiselle had the same. The rooms were spacious with a sofa area, a balcony, a huge bed and a big bathroom with a bath and a walk in shower.

The balcony overlooking the valley was really a nice spot to relax at the end of the day or to take in the view in the morning.

Royal champagne restaurants and food were delicious

Food 5/5

Without doubt, this is what I enjoyed the most at the Royal Champagne. We arrived on time for lunch and chose to have the more relaxed menu from the bar.  It was served on the terrace, which is a great space and was perfectly executed, with good seasoning, fresh ingredients and a delicate presentation.

For diner, you can either eat at the gastronomic one Michelin star restaurant Le Bellevue Royal Champagne or the regular restaurant.  The first night, as it was Mademoiselle’s birthday, we enjoyed the tasting menu at the Michelin restaurant.  Food was really delicious. I particularly liked how the chef added a touch of freshness to every dish, making them both flavoursome and light. I would have happily had another diner there, had we stayed longer.

Diner at the regular restaurant the second night was also very good. As it was still very warm, we were lucky to eat outside with a great view of the vineyards slowly fading in the falling night.

Breakfast (which is included in the room rate) was superb: a buffet affair with many bread choices, fruits, the most delicious local meats and cheese, pancakes, home made cakes, salads, yoghurts etc..  You can also order cooked eggs if you want. It was really a lovely start of the day.

Enjoy champagne at every opportunity!

Activities: 4/5

Royal Champagne has a very good choice of activities. Of course, you can spend your time in the spa.  With an outdoor pool and an indoor pool, both of significant size, you can definitely relax.

The outdoor infinity pool again has a great view of the valley. It is perfectly located to take advantage of the sun for most of the day.  There are enough chairs for all guests and you can order champagne to be drunk while you are in the pool!

Inside, the spa has a big indoor pool, again with lounges around so that would be really relaxing in the winter, jacuzzi, spa and hammam.

The spa treatments were lovely. I had a very good manicure one day and a body massage which was just perfect.

Of course, the main activity if you come here is to discover the champagne region.  There are some walks from the hotel through the vineyards, the forest and all the way to Champillon where you can see many of the champagne houses. The hotel recommended a simple café where you could taste champagne and eat some local food.  It was a really good appetizer for what the region can offer.

The hotel can of course arrange for visits of the famous champagne houses and of their own vineyards.

We stayed only over a weekend so couldn’t try everything but I have no doubt that there would be much more to explore.

The Royal Champagne hotel is as special and pricey as champagne!

Overall 4 / 5

A stay at the Royal Champagne was the perfect end to our summer.  The setting is beautiful, the service is really top notch and the food is delicious.  I’m sure many would rate it as the best hotel in Champagne. In any case, it is certainly the best luxury hotel in Champagne.

At 40 minutes from Paris, it is really an escape I would recommend. It is very pricey though so make it a special occasion and you certainly won’t be disappointed.
